We went behind the scenes to the Atlanta History Center to tell you the story of the “Cyclorama: The Big Picture”. The fully restored cyclorama painting “The Battle of Atlanta”, created 132 years ago, is at the center of this new multi-media experience. The hand-painted work of art stands 49 feet tall, is longer than a football field, and weighs 10,000 pounds. This painting is one of only two cycloramas in the United States (the other being “The Battle of Gettysburg” cyclorama in Pennsylvania), making Atlanta home to one of America’s largest historic treasures.
Among the new elements on the new exhibition, the Atlanta History Center has developed four short pieces where actors tell different stories about the Cyclorama. On this performance, Denmark Mitchell, a Post-Reconstruction era Journalist, performed by Damian Lockhart, talks about his experience with the original painting.
